Hello More Than A Memory;

I just discovered your site while searching for something else, and, shazam! in Gallery 2 (Cooper) what did I find but my class from 1953.  Familiar names are jumping out at me from 40-odd years ago, names I haven't thought about and those I have.  Pat Valentine--a friend, a great sprinter and born on the same day as me--as was Sandra Malloy...  Margaret Moore & her sister who lived a few houses away from me in Carman Drive in Bellsmyre. Red-haired Elizabeth Skinner.  Marie Gillies--she & I were backs on the hockey team at some point.  Frances McFarlane's dad was the science teacher--Fawdy McFarlane.

Where am I?  That might be me between Marie Gillies and Jean Orr.  I can't tell from the small scan.  Where are John Drummond, Donnie Blair, Jimmy Guthrie, Hugh Campbell,  John Hosie and the Burch twins--al my own croneis from Hartfield and Miss Syme's class?

My name is Anne Thomson.  I majored in art in the Academy with Ian Broadley and I went on to Glasgow School of Art in 1960 and have been in the States since 1964.  I'll look in the shoeboxes in the basement and see if there are any pix of interest to old Dumbartonians.

What a great site for those who are getting more nostalgic as we get older.

Thank you so much.

I enjoyed the web site  here in  the town of  George, Cape Province South Africa where I am visiting my son and family.  I came to  South Africa  from Dumbarton at the end of  1946 and have lived here ever since,  having had five trips back to Bonnie Scotland since then, the last one in 1989 with my husband, John Duncan, who was born of Scottish parents in South Africa, in 1921.  My name was Lucy  Nash and I lived at 114 Glasgow Road (Grange Place). I went to Knoxland School and have two school photos. with teachers Miss Lorimer and Miss Dougal.  I know the names of all the pupils in the photos. but unfortunately I haven't  got them with me.  Maybe next time I visit  my son I will bring the photos., that is if I receive any response to this.  When I attended Knoxland School it was in Bruce Street.  The Headmaster was Mr. Harvey and we were all scared of him as he was very strict.  He retired whenI was about nine years old and was replaced by Mr. Cross. I was really sad to see that the building had been knocked down when I  was last there in 1989.  My best friend was Maisie Birkmyre -  now Maisie Mills - and living in Australia.  We have kept in touch over the years and write to each other regularly, often reminiscing about our school days and our bicycle rides to the baths in Helensburgh  in the school summer holidays.  I have very happy memories of living in Dumbarton and consider myself a true "daughter of the Rock". I am now 81 years old and wonder if any of my school friends are still around.  I attended Knoxland Church , also sadly gone, and was an enthusiastic member of the Sunday school and the Brownies and Guides (6th  Dumbarton)..  My grandfather,William Nash, worked at Denny's, as did his six sons.  He and my grandmother lived at 9 Knoxland Square - a wonderful place to play in (with the bandstand where the Town Band used to come and play in summer evenings) and where there were great slides in the winter when the puddles froze!

Cheerio,

Lucy Duncan

Hi!

My Aunt Jean Kennedy MacDonald gave me these photos when I visited her in Drumchapel in 1970. The family shot is about 100 years old and shows my great grandparents James and Elizabeth Baird Kennedy and their first five (of ten) kids.

The kid standing on the right is my grandpa Jimmy who served with the Argyll (the other shots) in WWI. He and his wife Marie Oliver immigrated to Canada and then the States in the twenties. They were from Brigend.

I have a ton of second cousins in Scotland but I've lost touch. If anyone sees this who is a descendant of my Aunt Peggy Forsythe, Aunt Jean MacDonald, Uncle Davy Kennedy, Sandy, Jackie, or (in the Detroit area) Betsy Allen) drop me a line!

Re. this message from Brian Kennedy, which accompanied the photos now on Visitors' Gallery 7

Can you help Brian get back in touch with his descendants?

A nice PS to our appeal...the following day we got this message from Brian:

I've already been contacted by Shirley and Shani McFall from Vancouver BC. They are the grandaughters of Peggy Kennedy Forsythe my great Aunt and thus my second cousins. I met them when we were kids but lost touch. Shirley just happened to stop by your site and saw my photos and letter! It's like magic!

Hello. I am in Dumbarton for a few weeks from Vancouver Canada.

I saw your photos from Archie Hood, and then at the D'bton Burns Club supper last Friday, Gordon McIntyre, my cousin and a classmate of Archie's, had the photo of Dumbarton Academy with all the names bar one. I was in Archie's mother's class at Knoxland, and used to play football with Archie, my brother Angus, and others in Kerr's Park (now gone).

I will send you at least one old photo of Knoxland School when I get back to Canada. Could you possibly forward this email to Archie, since Gordon and I would like to get in touch with him.

Many thanks

Colin

Re. this message from Colin Stark

Can anyone help? If you have Archie Hood's email address (or if you're visiting the site, Archie) could you please forward it on.

Thank-you!

It's a great site! I have always loved old photos and have been able to get a lot from older relatives. I have a fair amount of old Dumbarton and a few postcards as well.

I have one great shot (I should scan it in) of my cousin Alistair Kennedy at about five years old standing with his mother at the entrance of their air raid shelter around 1940. He's in a kilt and tam and his mum is smiling away. On the back there's a note that's more serious though; "Here's Alistair guarding his mother at our air raid shelter. Many a night we had in it when Jerry was over."

I've only visited Dumbarton once but would love to return.

 Keep up the good work!

 Brian Kennedy

Have read with great interest all through your site, it is incredibly interesting.  My grandparents and parents were all from Dumbarton.

My greatgrandfather on my Dad's side  (Joe Wingate) held the first moving pictures on Dumbarton Common and later my Grandma Olive Burden went on to own the cinema in Dumbarton.  My grandfather John Drummond apparently had the Chemist in Dumbarton throughout the war years until he eventually sold to Boots.  My mother Catherine and all her brothers (Ian Campbell and Robert Drummond) all attended

Dumbarton Academy.  If there is any information on any of these people please let me know especially photos as there house was bombed and they lost almost alll their personal effects.

Yours Sincerely Liv Bills

This is a fabulous site.  Out of curiosity I popped into your site and believe it or not you have a picture of my father Tommy Conboy sitting in the front row St. Patrick's Choir 1931.  Thank you for the wonderful warm feeling it gave me to see this picture.  I will now be dropping in on a regular basis.  I will also see if I can find some old photo to send to you.  Say hi to all in Dumbarton from Mary Mullen (Conboy) now living in Canada.

Nice to see a site about the real Dumbarton, not
one of the American or Canadian copies.
As I get older I seem to look back at my home
town with a sort of longing!!
Well done guys, help with anything if I can.
