What's on the DVDs?

DVD 1:

Dumbarton Snapshots (9.53) Overview of the town, focusing on the variety of shops in the High Street.

Growth of the Town (11.24) Nature and location of new housing and its link with developments in public transport.

Domestic Life (13.49) Room-and-kitchens, black sinks, coal fires, gas lights, zinc baths, wash-houses, outside toilets, recess beds, overcrowding.

Washing Day (3.22) Detailed description of a day in the wash-house before washing machines were invented.

DVD 2:

Schooldays and Childhood (24.30) Aspects of schooling/ childhood activities. Includes curriculum, class sizes, discipline, leisure and entertainment (pictures, shows etc).

Wartime 1939-45) World War 2 from a Dumbarton perspective. Includes outbreak of war, defences, rationing, bombing of the town, evacuees.

The Education Pack

Curricular Areas Covered: People and Place, People in the Past, Health, ICT, Language, Mathematics, Expressive Arts.

Contents: The 30-page pack contains teachers notes, photocopyable worksheets, A4 photos, DVD's and background CD. Notes include detailed reference to web-based resources.

Distribution: Free copies were given to all local schools and FE colleges and the pack is now also being used in schools outwith West Dunbartonshire.
