Margaret Stewart

,

Lou's comments:

An heirloom family portrait which was passed to my daughter from her grandmother, Hilda MacLaren Richardson, in 1963. The portrait is oil and approximately 2 1/2 x 3 ft. Very nice gold frame. No artist or other information that I have found without taking it out of the frame.

This is the story as told to me by Hilda and her sister, Lillian: "The picture must be around one hundred and forty years old. Grandma's name was Margaret Stewart and she was born in Dunbarton Castle situated on the Clyde River in Scotland. She was an only girl but had seventeen brothers. She married a cabinet maker who worked in the castle and was then disowned by her family. "

I have traced both sides of this MacLaren/Thomson family back into Scotland but have not come to Margaret. I have also looked at some of the history of Dunbarton Castle and cannot find a family living in it back to Mary Queen of Scots?

Can anyone help to specifically identify her and/or help me trace back to her? Any help appreciated,
